Chapter Twenty-One
The blond girl’s head slams against the tile. Gripping her hair, the bald, blue-eyed man slams her head back again and again. She goes limp and slides to the floor, leaving a trail of blood.
The man straddles her and puts his large hands around her neck. As her eyes open, he starts to squeeze the life out of her.
“Summer,” the girl’s hazel eyes lock onto Summer. “You need to stop this.”
Summer stares in horror, and it feels like there are hands around her throat, too. “I’m sorry. I can’t help you. I can’t change what he did to you.”
“You need to stop this,” she repeats. “Stop…”
The light goes out of her eyes.
Summer bolted up in bed, gasping for air. The covers were tangled around her legs, and she kicked, needing to break free. She took a couple deep breaths to calm her racing heart, and dropped her head in her hands. Why does she look so familiar?
The red numbers on her alarm clock read 3:50. She lay back down, eyes wide open.

Sleep wasn’t going to happen. Her whole body ached, so she took a shower, got dressed, and headed downstairs. In her effort to not wake Dad, she didn’t turn on the lights, and wrecked into a stack of boxes at the bottom of the stairs.
She stumbled over them and fell to the floor. “Oh holy crap,” she said as she sat rubbing her knee.
Lights flipped on, and Dad appeared at the top of the stairs, phone in one hand. He lowered his phone when his gaze landed on her. “Are you trying to sneak out?”
“No. I just couldn’t sleep. Was it really necessary to booby trap the stairs?”
Dad came down and helped her stack the boxes. “They’re old work files I need to go through.”
Once all the boxes were stacked and moved off to the side, out of the way, Dad sat on the stairs. “What’s going on, Summer?”
“Bad dreams.” The girl’s face kept popping into her mind, driving her crazy. She’d seen that face before.
“Bad enough you don’t want to go back to sleep?”
Summer nodded. “Yeah. I’ve had bad dreams before, but these…” A chill skated down her spine.
“You want to talk about it?” Dad asked.
Summer certainly couldn’t tell him exactly what the dream was about or why she was having it. She didn’t even know herself.
“Are you having a hard time with Liam?”
“We hit a snag today, but I think we’ll be able to work through it. The stress just sometimes makes it hard to sleep.” And the visions. Those make it impossible to sleep.
“What about you and Troy?” he asked. “Did you two figure everything out?”
“Yeah, we’re good now. Just a stupid misunderstanding.”
Dad stared at the floor for a minute. “What time is it now?”
Summer peeked around the corner at the clock on the wall. “Almost five-thirty.”
Dad sighed. “Well, since we’re both wide awake and have some time to kill, you want to go somewhere for breakfast?”
“I’d like that. We’re talking all you can eat,
